Students love coffee too and often rely on the effects of a heavy dose of caffeine to keep them awake and alert throughout the day. Student life can be difficult. Hours of classes in combination with full or part-time jobs, activities, and sports can be exhausting. Did you know that cup of coffee can help you with your schooling and tests?

Popularity of Caffeine

Coffee shops are easily accessible. You don’t have to drive far to grab a quick cup of coffee in the mornings because there are stores everywhere! Many students drink coffee, not only in the mornings, but all day long. The continual dosage of caffeine can produce adverse effects if too much is consumed. However, four cups or less can deliver some great mental health benefits.

There are Starbucks and other types of coffee houses littering the streets, especially near large college campuses and high schools. In one study, researchers found that over half of people in the United States over the age of 18 drink coffee every day. Students love caffeinated beverages and rely on them to increase their energy and to stay alert no matter how tired they are.

Increased Attention

Caffeine stimulates your central nervous system. Due to the stimulation, alertness, awakeness, concentration, energy, and attention span are all improved.

That is why so many students and adults love to sip coffee in the morning because it helps them focus and retain information better. Testing is often stressful for students and there are those that do not test well. The caffeine in a cup of coffee can improve your focus, as well as help, retain the information you need for your test.

Caffeine Quantity

Studies have shown that moderate to low amounts of caffeine do produce increased cognitive function, something students and especially those who take tests are in dire need of. Overdosing on caffeine can increase anxiety and your heart rate.

It is recommended that students and coffee drinkers keep their caffeine intake to approximately 30 to 400 mg per day. Any more and the large amount can cause dehydration along with the other mentioned negative side effects. Staying within the parameters of the recommended caffeine intake can help students focus as their cognitive performance is increased during school and testing.

Sleep and Performance

Caffeine can keep you awake for many hours after it has been consumed. It tends to linger in our systems for several hours. Students often stay up late and rely on caffeine to keep them awake. This can interfere with your sleep. When it comes time to rest, you may feel alert and unable to sleep.

Consuming your coffee earlier in the day can help you achieve better sleep at night. Try eating food like turkey or drinking hot, decaffeinated tea to encourage drowsiness. Classes can be stressful and tiring, and eating certain foods, especially after caffeinating all day can help you rest.

As a student, try to avoid making or purchasing coffee drinks with lots of extra syrups and sugar. If you want to feel alert and energized, drink the recommended amount of coffee and with limited additives.

These extras cause more harm than good and can cause the dreaded “sugar crash,” leaving you exhausted and mentally drained. About four cups or less can deliver the needed mental benefits and can be particularly useful during class to help you retain information and also during testing.
